On 26th November, Kingsford had the privilege of hosting a delegation from Peking University, one of China’s most prestigious institutions, to introduce the captivating art of Kunqu Opera to our pupils. With a history spanning over 600 years, Kunqu is one of the oldest and most revered forms of Chinese opera still performed today. This ancient and esteemed form of Chinese theatre left a lasting impression on Kingsford pupils, who, having already received world-class Mandarin education, were further enriched by this exposure to Chinese culture.

The day began with professors from Peking University explaining the historical significance of Kunqu Opera, comparing it to Shakespearean plays and highlighting its continued relevance in modern times.

The session featured a performance of scenes from The Peony Pavilion, a romantic tragicomedy written by dramatist Tang Xianzu in 1598. The performance immediately captivated our pupils. From the moment the performers entered the room, pupils were awestruck by the intricate make-up and the stunning, colourful embroidered silk costumes.

The performance, marked by elegant movements from the painted-faced performers, was delivered with strong, powerful voices and expressive gestures that transported the pupils to a different world.

Following the performance, pupils participated in interactive workshops led by professors and PhD pupils. They had the opportunity to try on traditional costumes, practice movements with props such as fans, and learn the elegant gestures, including the use of silky sleeves, which are central to Chinese classical opera performances. This hands-on experience allowed pupils to bridge their language studies with cultural practices, deepening their understanding and appreciation of Chinese traditions.

One pupil shared, “I was amazed by the elegance of the performers and the beauty of the costumes. Trying out the movements in the costumes was such a unique experience—I’ll never forget it!”

At Kingsford, learning languages goes beyond lessons; it’s about immersing pupils in experiences that bring culture to life. Opportunities like this foster a deeper appreciation of different cultures and heritage, nurturing global perspectives.

Kingsford’s commitment to international learning ensures our pupils are not only well-rounded linguists but also culturally informed global citizens, ready to embrace the diversity of the world and seize unique global opportunities.
